The Hertfordshire Care Trust

About HCT

The Hertfordshire Care Trust runs three projects for children and young people who are under-achieving, in difficulties or at risk.

The Wheels Project

Based in Stevenage, this project provides practical training in employable skills for those who have missed out on standard school and college courses. It has been running successfully since 1995. It is for young people 13-25 and aims to encourage them to fulfill their potential, engage with society and reduce crime.

The Project runs a workshop and organises activities so that young people who might otherwise be excluded can participate in education and training. Its clients include NEETs (young people Not in Employment, Education or Training).

It helps them to :-

• Adopt stable life styles

• Train for recognised qualifications

• Achieve worthwhile objectives

• Develop new interests

Linked to the Wheels Project is :-

The Wheels Mobile Project

A converted bus with studio and IT equipment, which tours around providing facilities for young people in a range of places. It can provide a first point of contact.

Both Wheels Projects have operated at a loss in recent years, the shortfall being made up from reserves of the Hertfordshire Care Trust. Unfortunately, this cannot continue, and there is an urgent need for further funding.

The Ace Project

A project for children who are not attending school, operates in the west and south of the county. It is currently expanding its work to another base in Stevenage. It has been running since 1999 and has secured funding until April 2011 from the Hertfordshire Children’s Trust Partnership’s Prevention 513 Fund.

Ace provides a service for children up to the age of 14 years, is very flexible and will try to help with anything which might assist children to attend school regularly. It employs carefully selected and experienced Project Workers to support an individual child, acting as a befriender and mentor and providing him/her with practical advice and assistance. Ace works closely with Hertfordshire’s Children, Schools and Families Service.
